Women’s Advisory Committee
PRESS STATEMENT: Tragic Violence against Women in Our Society.
The Women’s Advisory Committee of the Guyana Public Service Union strongly condemns the abhorrent criminal situation where three (3) females were mercilessly executed in their Soesdyke home on Wednesday April 23, 2025 by one of the victim’s husband. The perpetuator subsequently died due to ingested poisonous substance. A close relative of the three women who was also shot is in a critical condition under medical care.
On Wednesday April 23, 2025 also a young girl, 11 year old Adrianna Young went missing while on a social outing with relatives at a hotel poolside. At about 13:00 hrs the Police stated that they received a report of the missing child and started an investigation. They subsequently released misinformation to the public. On Thursday morning, April 24, 2025 the young girl was found floating in the said hotel pool. She was pronounced dead. The investigation is continuing.
These two situations are terrifying to say the least and are not isolated. The frequency with which tragic cases of domestic violence is unfolding in our small society is very alarming. The Media has reported several instances where survivors or their families have alleged that complaints to the Guyana Police Force of domestic violence realized little or no tangible results in that the victims and perpetuators continue to live in the same environment. It therefore suggests that the Services of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is not enough and not impactful to deter these consequences. The Judiciary may also have a role to play when such cases are presented for prosecution.
The Women’s Committee takes this opportunity to extend to the families of the LaCruez’s and little Adrianna Young our sincere condolences. Both situations are horrific and is not a reflection of who Guyanese really are. More needs to be done to address the sickening occurrences of domestic violence and a collective effort to eradicate and change what is quickly becoming a norm.
Once again our sincere and heartfelt condolence to the relatives and families of the LaCruez's and Adrianna Young.
