PRESS STATEMENT: United Nations Public Service Day 2021
First of all, I would like to say to all Public Servants, Happy United Nations Public Service Day 2021. This recognition comes about with the adoption of Resolution 59/277 on March 2003 by the United Nations General Assembly. It acknowledges the incredible role and value of public services and applauded public sector workers, globally for their valuable contributions they make and continue to make in the interest of mankind worldwide.
It is also aimed at encouraging young people to pursue careers in the public sector.
Public Service Day 2021 is being celebrated under the theme: “Innovating for a New Era: Leveraging the role of technology for the Future of Public Service”.
This theme is most fitting, recognizing the unavoidable and dramatic changes that are taking place, with public servants as the premier workforce having to take the lead and being faced with the revelation of climate change which has evolved and is now viewed as climate emergency, inequalities that are disruptive in societies, which task public servants with finding innovative ways to remedy the situation, among many other challenges that are occurring, including the finding of data driven and sensible solutions.
Now we are confronted with the enormous challenge of resisting the devastating effects of Covid 19 pandemic in which they are at grave risks and the possibility of life threatening circumstances. Among all these upheavals, there is constant conflict to get respect from unrelenting partisan political interventions that daily manoeuvre to undermine professionalism and principled approach to discharge their functions evenhandedly.
Constantly Public Servants have to find new ways to solve problems, implement new policies efficiently and effectively and deliver quality public services to the satisfaction of the public.
